The Sheboygan Police Department issued a notice early Sunday evening saying the pier was closed due to unsafe conditions caused by the waves. The Sheriff’s Office says the men realized they were going to get wet from waves hitting the pier.
On Sunday, one emergency post was utilized – and Coast Guard officials were able to arrive on scene quickly enough to save the life of Dylan Abeyta-Dedecker.
One man was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard and treated at a hospital.
The Sheboygan County dive team was called in but was unable to continue it’s dive operation because of the treacherous water conditions.
“People get complacent. It’s a very unsafe environment”, said Jason Dwyer, Chief Boatswain’s Mate for the U.S. Coast Guard. “Just as I was losing hope, a coast guard boat pulled me from the water and I was transported there and I’m still here as I write”.
At about 5:21 p.m., two fishermen at the end of the pier were swept into the harbor by waves.
At approximately 9:45 p.m. on Sunday night, the search was suspended.
Fire officials say the search resumed Monday morning.
As the search continued on Monday, the Milwaukee Police Department Boat Patrol was requested and they had a piece of equipment that could provide a better image of what the DNR side-scan sonars were picking up.
At approximately 7:00 p.m., Adam Laluzerne was located and removed from the water.
Two vigils were held for the victims Monday.
“I think there’s a sense of shock”.
While docks, breakwalls, piers and rocks are seemingly ideal places to take pictures or video of storms, members of Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan and its sub-units on the lake have responded to numerous cases involving people swept off of a wall or pier by rough seas.
