Thomas said the persons involved in the incident may have wanted to try to “settle the score” at a basketball game at Muskegon High School.
The shooting happened after four people were prevented from entering the school for a basketball game between Muskegon Heights Academy and Ottawa Hills High School.
McCaleb, authorities said, drew his weapon on the deputy and the deputy shot at McCaleb.
Police allege that McCaleb shot and wounded two females and a male after the boys varsity game between Muskegon Heights and a Grand Rapids school.
In the short term, classes will not be held Thursday, Feb. 11, and as midwinter break hits Friday, students will be off until February 22.
The superintendent added, “Law enforcement responded and a fifth person was reportedly shot by police”.
“Grand Rapids Public Schools, Muskegon Heights schools and law enforcement discussed the chatter”. “However, we are taking several precautions and several steps to further strengthen our security”.
Zachery-Ross was among those in attendance. “Again, this was not the result of any prior specific threats”, Zachary-Ross explained. No district students, parents, supporters or staff were believed to have been involved, the spokesman said, adding everyone from GRPS was safely on their way home. He said they “heard commotion” as they wrapped up a postgame prayer.
“The suspect is in custody and presents no safety concerns for the public”, he said.
Zachery-Ross said she was told by the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office that McCaleb is believed to have been the only civilian involved who was in possession of a firearm. “I think it would have been worse if we wouldn’t have been here”.
