30-feet dead whale washes ashore at Juhu Beach

January 29 20:02 2016

Bilkulonline.com, Mumbai, Jan 29: A very big Bryde’s whale, approximately 40 feet long, which was washed to the Juhu beach here around midnight, drew huge crowds even as authorities made efforts to clear it off on Friday. The whale that was spotted by joggers around 9pm weighs around three to four tones. The Hindu reports that officials are looking for a burial place, as the administration lacks the expertise to preserve whale’s carcass. This incident comes just days after some whales were stranded along Tuticorin beach in Tamil Nadu.

The Bryde’s whale is found worldwide in warm temperate and tropical waters. Two hydraulic cranes will be pressed into action to move the carcass to Airoli. Officials rescued and took 36 of the mammals back to sea. “It bloated and was then carried in by the tide to the beach”, Assistant Conservator of Forest said.

In June 2015, during the monsoon, a 42-foot-long blue whale was washed ashore at the Revdanda coast, near Alibaug, the headquarters of the neighbouring Raigad district of the coastal Konkan belt. “Posing with an endangered species is an offence”, he kept telling enthusiastic citizens who clicked many selfies with the dead mammal. “Our investigations will be on as to see what was the reason of death of this handsome creature”, Ghodke said.
