Google’s putting in a heap of money into their marketing campaign for the Pixel phones, and the company’s goal to get that marketing to push phones out the door appears to be working quite well. It’s a very Google-y phone, putting your Google services at the heart and offering the very latest features from Android. The Pixel line is powerful, the Google Assistant is handy, and the design is trim and lean. Google is moving attention away from the search bar more than ever.
But there’s little definitive about the Pixel, save that it’s meant to be the vehicle for definitive versions of Google’s Android operating system-it runs version 7.1, known as “Nougat”-and the new, touted Google Assistant“.
While the latest functionalities of the latest OS by Google, Android 7.1 Nougat, are enjoyed by quite some people as of now, a lot of Android smartphone users haven’t even upgraded to the previous operating system which is Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
As a lifelong Android user, I couldn’t wait to try the Pixel. It may be too early to judge but the Pixel has a big potential to sell more than the Nexus. Well, it is time to kick out that phone plan you have been using alongside the Samsung Galaxy or iPhone handset and make the switch to Project Fi using any of the supported devices. Hence, the reviewer maintains that the claim is not really true, but he also admits that the Pixel devices’ camera is actually the best one yet for Google’s smartphone releases.
Google is selling its new phone from $599 at the similar price in iPhone for those tech fans who want a premium phone in their hand. Overall, I’d give Google the edge in voice recognition accuracy and experience, but it doesn’t feel like an insurmountable lead.
It can do some cool tricks, too. Otherwise the devices are virtually identical, down to the fingerprint sensor on the back. Just double tap the power button to start the camera, even if the phone is locked.
The Pixel comes equipped with a ridiculous camera that scored a high rating from benchmarkers DxOMark. All of the phones are still available, but the Google Pixel XL in “Very Silver” in either 32GB or 128GB are being significantly delayed, with the current shipping estimate set for November 22, over a month after the proper retail launch. My text message conversations were all there, and my contacts carried over. The idea is to use artificial intelligence and machine learning, plus the huge storehouse of data Google has on us, to provide better answers and more helpful suggestions than Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa.
Google Assistant is cool, but doesn’t seem that far ahead of Siri. But like the Nexus phones before it, which developed a geeky reputation, it is going to struggle to attract a wide audience. When you long press on the home button or say “OK, Google” to talk to the Assistant, you can then say “help” and see tips and tutorials covering basic features.
There’s also the matter of the confusing marketing surrounding the Pixel. Photos shot with Pixel’s camera don’t look as good as the iPhone’s. (Verizon is the official US carrier.) As a result, the Pixel is being advertised more heavily-on TV, outdoors, and in newspapers-than any Nexus phones were. Users of Pixel phones can be free their mind whenever thinking about a little more space for photos and videos.
