New 911 Dispatcher Helped A Utah Woman Kristin Allred Deliver A Baby

December 25 07:48 2015

Kristin Allred informed that they were really close to the hospital, but she felt like she needed to start pushing.

William Kalaher, an emergency dispatcher out of Utah, answered the couple’s call. He called 911 was she was starting to deliver her daughter in the auto.

A Utah couple recently welcomed a new baby girl to the family, but the delivery was not conventional.

“He definitely helped us stay calm in the fact of helping her breathe, because that was just terrifying”, said Kristin Allred.

Kristen told ABC News that “within a minute” of talking to Kalaher, she “had given birth“. Kalaher asked if the baby was breathing – she wasn’t – and then told the Allreds what to do.

Baby Anne started breathing about 30 seconds later, five minutes before help arrived. As her husband kept driving to the hospital, Kristin noticed that there was something wrong with her newborn daughter.

Kalaher kept his cool during the ordeal, telling them that she probably wasn’t breathing because the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck.

William guided Shay in the 911 call saying, “I need you to take a string-a shoelace, possibly-and tie it tightly around the umbilical chord about 6 inches from the baby”. “Having him there helped us focus and this is what we needed to do”, said the father. They were taken to the Intermountain Medical Center (IMC) on Friday and were released on Sunday. The dispatcher said that he and his colleagues often joked about the odds to get a pregnancy call, but on that day it really happened.

“I was like, ‘Mom, I delivered a baby on I-15!”, he said. Kristin immediately placed the infant on her chest while husband Shay continued driving toward the Salt Lake City hospital where they had planned to deliver the baby.

Although the couple hasn’t met Kalaher, they are fully grateful for his help in the moment of panic, in which they had the opportunity to have Anne, a girl who was completely healthy and ready to celebrate Christmas.
