Clinton announces $2 billion a year effort to cure Alzheimer’s disease

Clinton has often spoken on the campaign trail about meeting supporters who are struggling to care for family members with Alzheimer’s.

The front-runner for her party’s nomination for the November 2016 presidential election was to discuss her plan on Tuesday in an appearance in Fairfield, Iowa.

In a statement released by her people, Clinton says that the Americans owe this to every person who worries for the sake of their loved ones to find a cure for the bad disease.

She said the best scientists tell us that a chance to move toward the path of Alzheimer’s cure is within reach. “And, to have the resources and a plan like the one proposed should open doors to new systems and mechanisms we haven’t fully investigated”, Kinney said. The new plan will be paid for by tax reforms and other savings. A total of over 5 million men and women are living with Alzheimer’s while a total of more 15 million of men and women are caring for people with the disease. Cancer research, for example, receives $6 billion in funding while heart disease research is now at $2 billion annually.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and the only cause of death among the top 10 in the USA that cannot be prevented, cured, or slowed.

In laying out the proposal, the Clinton campaign mentioned that women and older Hispanics and African-Americans are particularly vulnerable to the disease.

As well as the build-up of amyloidal protein in the brain, another key contributor to Alzheimer’s disease is the build-up of the protein tau.

A cure for Alzheimer’s would also help caregivers, including the so-called sandwich generation – people providing care for their children and their parents at the same time. “We are budget constrained, not knowledge constrained – if we have more money for Alzheimer’s disease we will many more shots on goal, many more genes being studied”.
