On the most recent Billboard 200 albums chart (dated January 9, but reflecting data for the week ending December 24), Adele’s 25 continued to lead while Chris Brown‘s Royalty earned the week’s highest debut. “25” becomes the only album since Nielsen began tracking sales in 1991 to ever sell more than one million copies in three weeks. The lead up to Christmas obviously helped to give album sales a push, with consumers purchasing the album as a Christmas gift during the holiday rush. The even more impressive statistic is that it sold over 1 million copies for a third week.
The Billboard 200 chart no longer reflects only sales, but also includes “streaming” to account for rankings.
Adele’s latest album 25 continues to destroy all album sales records, exceeding a total of 7 million United States purchases in its fifth week of being available to the public. In addition, the album just scored its third week of selling over one million copies. Pentatonix’s “That’s Christmas to Me” slips one rung to No 4 with another 140,000 units, down less than 1 percent from last week.
There were a two new albums in the Top 10 this week. In addition, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens soundtrack blasted in at No. 5.
