Rubio has ramped up his visits here over the last couple months – holding around two dozen events – and his campaign says he’ll spend a lot of time in the state in January. Right to Rise USA is spending $1.4 million on a 30-second spot that will run in Iowa over the next two weeks, an apparent attempt to blunt any momentum Rubio could pick up in the upcoming Iowa caucuses on February 1.
Rubio has fewer paid staff than some competitors and his state director hails from Arkansas. The senator vowed that if he’s elected president, he will immediately take a series of steps to reverse the direction of the federal government under Obama, including cancelling Obama’s executive orders, opposing Common Core educational standards, and supporting a constitutional Convention of States.
Rubio’s spokesman, Alex Conant, called it “dishonest” for the Right to Rise ad to omit that detail.
But Rubio’s super-PAC, Conservative Solutions, quickly retaliated with a web ad attacking the former Florida governor, suggesting that a season of heretofore mostly positive political advertising is coming to a close.
Speaking in western Iowa, Trump also took aim at those who argue that Iowa and New Hampshire should not always be the first states to cast presidential primary season votes.
This week, Rubio will be joined by Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-South Carolina, on all of his stops, according to his campaign.
Rubio and Christie are on a collision-course as they seek to consolidate establishment support within the GOP, but Christie told reporters he wasn’t singling out Rubio because of it. “Everybody’s crowding my space”, he said, adding he views everyone in the 13-candidate field as competition. “It’s sad to see Jeb’s “joyful” campaign reduced to such intellectual dishonesty”. “Just remember this. You got to remember in all fairness, to the best of my knowledge, not too many evangelicals come out of Cuba”.
Both are leading preference polls nationally – though Trump appears increasingly vulnerable in Iowa, while Clinton faces a challenge from Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders in New Hampshire.
