While the president and his administration have not yet fleshed out the action, changes include expanding the “background check requirement to additional sellers”, the report notes. The president has consistently expressed frustration after mass shootings, saying it shouldn’t be so easy for somebody who wants to inflict harm on other people to get his or her hands on a gun.

“This is not something I can do by myself”, Obama said after the community college shooting in October.

“The president has made clear he’s not satisfied with where we are and expects that work to be completed soon”, said White House spokesman Eric Schultz. The president will deliver his final State of the Union address on January 12th. The National Rifle Association, a powerful pro-gun advocacy group, has criticized Obama’s attempts at gun control, saying a closer look needs to be paid to school security and the video game industry, Fox News reported.

The executive order would redefine the parameters of gun dealers, who are now required to obtain licenses only if their business is run with the “principal objective of livelihood and profit”.

Frustrated with little action from Congress, Obama has vowed to use “whatever power this office holds” to put in place gun control measures via executive action.

Gun control activists have long lobbied for universal background checks, and closing the “gun show” loophole, but attempts at that have failed to pass Congress.

She also favors a proposal to ban Americans on the no-fly list from purchasing firearms, also backed by the president.

White House adviser Valerie Jarrett said earlier this month that the recommendations being submitted to Obama will include measures to expand background checks.
