The Met confirmed New Year’s Eve was one of two events – along with Notting Hill Carnival – in which there was no holiday entitlement, meaning all available staff were called upon.
As in previous years, the London Eye was the focal point of the pyrotechnic extravaganza, which could be seen for miles around.

London New Year’s Day Parade spokesman Dan Kirkby said: “It has been fantastic and we’ve seen about 500,000 people come along – the best turn-out we have ever seen”.
