No injuries or serious property damage were reported and Earthquakes Canada said none would be expected from a shaker of that size.
Geophysicist John Cassidy with the Sidney, B.C.-based Geological Survey of Canada noted the quake was between 50 and 60 kilometres below the southeast coast of Vancouver Island.

There were no reports of significant damage or injuries, KIRO adds. Experts say that a quake with a magnitude of 7.3 could prove catastrophic, resulting in as many as 10,000 deaths, while some buildings would collapse, the Vancouver Observer reports.
In Vancouver, TransLink shut down two if its SkyTrain lines until staff could ensure guideways were safe.
There was also a separate magnitude 4.4 quake on Sunday near San Bernardino, Calif.
The temblor was followed by several apparent aftershocks, including one with a preliminary magnitude of 3.8 at 5:53 p.m. and another with a preliminary magnitude of 3.2, according to the USGS.
Social media posts began immediately, with residents from Blaine to Sudden Valley reporting a pair of quick, sharp jolts.
Friends and family said the natural disaster was felt on Vancouver Island and all the way up to Nanaimo.
Some Puget Sound residents were rattled overnight by the largest quake in the Northwest in more than a decade. There were no reports of damage but aftershocks were felt as far as Kelowna and Penticton in the province’s Interior.
