Not to mention the Tigers are coming off a 9-3 season that likely would have finished 10-3 if not for a game against heavy underdog McNeese State of the second-tier Football Championship subdivision being called off by persistent lightning.

“I’m really, really pleased to get this win over a very good Richmond team”, Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith said. LSU outrushed Texas Tech 384-29 as the Tigers took advantage of a run defense that was one of the worst in the nation.

LSU scored 21 points in the third quarter to take 42-20 lead into the fourth quarter. It would be tough for Fournette to top what he did this season statistically, but a 2000 yard season next year would be a start.

Yet, the Red Raiders couldn’t pull the win off the SEC team.

“I’d say tonight was productive”, Fournette said.

“What we needed to have happen in this game to improve is we needed to have our quarterback play”, Miles said. The 6-1, 230-pound Fournette also set an LSU record for rushing touchdowns.

Nick Stevens orchestrated a quick-hitting drive in the final minute with no timeouts, but receiver Jordon Vaden was unable to get out of bounds at Nevada’s 12-yard line, and time ran out on the Rams.

“We got better, ” Kingsbury said. “Instead of being 28-23 or 28-27, it was 35-20”. When the opponent is as strong defensively as LSU is, the entire landscape of the game changes to where Tech’s up-tempo offense can’t keep up with the drives its defense keeps losing. Harris faked it to Fournette and kept for a 26-yard touchdown run and 42-20 lead with nine seconds to go in the third period.

“That was a different level of pass rush than we’ve seen this year”, Kingsbury said, via the Advocate.

Texas Tech sophomore quarterback Patrick Mahomes was running for his life the majority of the game, but still managed to go 28-56 for 370 yards and four touchdowns, including three scores to Jakeem Grant. Fournette’s five touchdowns (30 points) broke the 10-year old bowl’s record for individual points (24) in the game and he raised his season rushing yardage total to 1,953.

CT jumped out to an 8-2 lead over the first 3:19, but Texas responded with a 10-0 run and took a 16-10 lead on a 3-pointer by Mack. And for all the criticism that Cameron received on Twitter – including from yours truly – LSU amassed 638 yards of total offense.

Given that the Texas Tech defense had been allowing an average of 231 yards per game, most people believed that Fournette could realistically reach 300 or more yards on the evening. What Else? – LSU RB Leonard Fournette ran 29 times for 212 yards and four scores, and caught one pass for 44 yards and a touchdown.

LSU still utilized Clapp as its primary lead blocker.

Devin Chafin added 161 yards and a touchdown, and Terence Williams rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns for Baylor.

LSU scored 56 points in the game against the Red Raiders -€” the new school record for points scored in a bowl game -€” with Fournette being directly responsible for 30 of those points with his four rushing touchdowns along with one receiving touchdown. Mahomes threw incomplete on a two-point conversion attempt.
