“If the chief minister were to handle the force, it will have to face political interference in local issues”, Bassi said. Security was increased at airports, railway stations, bus stands, armed forces’ establishments, among other places.
Following Central Intelligence input that two Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists had sneaked into the national Capital and were suspected to be planning high-profile attacks, including taking hostages, the Delhi Police on Sunday stepped up security measures in the city.
Delhi was put on high alert Saturday in the wake of the Pathankot terror attack.
Security was also ramped up in popular market places and the VIP zone in Lutyens’ Delhi.
Since there are specific inputs of VIPs being on the terrorists’ radar, Delhi Police’s elite units such as the crime branch and special cell have been roped in to come up with a strategy to deal with the potential threats.
Choppers will be used for round-the-year aerial surveillance in the national capital mostly to monitor and regulate traffic during peak hours, by next year, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi said today. Police said they would conduct more such mock drills over the next couple of days to test the alertness and readiness of the security forces.
Earlier, there were inputs that Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Goa and Kolkata were on the radar of some terrorists groups. “We have planned to take helicopters from Pawan Hans Ltd. on rental basis for the objective”, Bassi said at the annual conference of Delhi Police here.
