Only a few folks – primarily Sonos – have cracked it but Samsung is hot on the whole-home kick with the HW-K950, a Dolby Atmos-enabled soundbar that includes three forward-facing and two upward speakers. “Since the new system will be a 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos system, the ‘.4” in the soundbar’s name hints at four upward-firing sound beams which bounce off the ceiling to get sound raining down on the users.
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are “object-based” surround formats which include height information which is meant to provide more immersion than standard 5.1 or 7.1 soundtracks.
If you’ve not yet experienced Atmos, it takes traditional surround sound and throws in support for noises from overhead.
The soundbar mark Samsung’s flagship of the soundbar line. “Samsung’s new Soundbar with Dolby Atmos technology, deliver the ultimate in cinematic home entertainment, especially when paired with Samsung’s new SUHD TVs”.
The HW-K950 package includes a slim soundbar, two wireless rear speakers, and a wireless subwoofer. Each one features Samsung’s Ring Radiator technology, which allows each speaker to be placed anywhere in the room and still deliver big, yet balanced sound.
Samsung has yet to announce pricing or availability for the HW-K950 or the new Radiant360 options.
In addition to the HW-K950, Samsung will also unleash new colors and patterns for the company’s Radiant360 Series.
There’s no official price as of yet for the Samsung HW-K950 soundbar, but it’s expected to be unveiled on the company’s show floor at CES 2016.
