Girl, 2, dies after swallowing battery

Tragic Brianna Florer died in hospital after she swallowed a small push battery during the previous week.

Late Sunday, Brianna threw up blood, and her body turned a blue color.

Little Brianna was rushed to a hospital in Tulsa where she immediately went into surgery, but she later died.

Brianna’s death came just days after one of Britain’s leading paediatric surgeons warned of the dangers of button batteries after recently treating two patients who became critically ill after swallowing them.

The toddler’s grandfather told reporters that “They operated on her for 2 hours, but they couldn’t stop the bleeding”. “They believed the battery ate through to her carotid artery by way of her esophagus”, Vince said.

Eddie Johnson with the state medical examiner’s office said the child’s autopsy is pending, and it would be two to four months before an official cause and manner of death is known. “Please be sure to share her story with all your friends and loved ones so that they will take precautions with their [children’s] toys, remotes, hearing aides (sic), and so many other things that now use these ‘button batteries'”. “One minute she is flawless, and the next minute she is dead”, said Brianna’s Grandfather Kent Vice.

He said: “As these types of batteries are common in toys and gadgets that may be given as presents, the risk of children swallowing them increases during the Christmas period”.

The family, who live in Oklahoma, has set up a fundraising page aiming to raise $7,500 to pay for Brianna’s funeral. He said no fatalities have been reported to the center. Fatal cases involve when the battery gets stuck and secretes an alkaline substance.

In order to prevent any injuries or deaths related to button batteries, CPSC has advised the public to “not allow children to play with or be in contact with coin cell batteries”, and “Never put batteries in your mouth for any reason because they are easily swallowed accidentally”. “Imagine dropping little tiny drops of lye in one place in the esophagus”, Litovitz said. “I took care of her – she was just an angel”.
