Samsung has not unveiled pricing on the new SSD, which is expected to start shipping out in February of 2016.
The Samsung T3 SSD comes with some significant upgrades based on feedback from the launch of the T1. Not only has Samsung improved things from a storage capacity standpoint, but it also claims to deliver “outstanding performance” and a durability boost for those who lead a mobile lifestyle.
Samsung hasn’t said what the SSD T3 will cost, but it succeeds the SSD T1 drive, which shipped a year ago and was priced at US$179.99 for a 250GB drive and $599.99 for a 1TB drive.
SEOUL, Korea – January 5, 2016 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., today announced the Samsung Portable SSD T3, a premium, palm-sized, external solid state drive (SSD) that offers multi-terabyte (TB) storage capacity. “It’s the new portable external storage drive users can depend on in any situation or environment”, Kim added. Users can send data from the T3 to a PC and vice versa, access content on the T3 through mobile devices, and view the drive’s multimedia content on large-screen devices such as TVs. Unlike traditional hard disk drives, SSDs have no moving parts, making them less vulnerable to damage if they’re dropped or bumped.
The T3 also features a new shock-resistant metal case and internal frame, which can withstand up to 1,500G of force and will survive a drop of up to two meters, according to the company.
Transfer speeds are spec’d at up to 450MB/sec, and the drive supports USB Type-C now, although with a proper adapter cable you can still connect it to devices lacking that newer port. Including Android mobile devices that support external drives through the use of a forthcoming app. So you can carry a healthy stock of 4K movies in your pocket, without maxing out your smartphone’s limited storage. An integrated Thermal Guard is also included, which helps prevent overheating in extreme temperatures.
