Richards added, “We’re proud to endorse Hillary Clinton for President of the United States”.
In its first presidential primary endorsement in its 100-year history, Planned Parenthood announced Thursday it would endorse Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. On Tuesday, NARAL Pro-Choice America endorsed Clinton and her campaign. “In fact, no other 2016 candidate has shown such strong, lifelong commitment to the issues Planned Parenthood Action Fund cares about”.
The group, which has been under fire from Republicans after a number of controversies over its abortion practices, will formally endorse Clinton at a campaign event in New Hampshire on Sunday, Fox News confirmed.
Planned Parenthood has seen a significant wave of backlash and bad public relations this year after anti-abortion rights activists released a video of a Planned Parenthood official discussing the price of fetal organs.
The endorsement, while not a surprise, could help Clinton build on her lead with women voters – an essential group for a candidate to win in 2016. But this endorsement, which is technically made through the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, will bring at least $20 million to spend on presidential and Senate races in battleground states like New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, the New York Times reported. “Thankfully, President Obama will exercise his veto power to stop the Republicans from cutting off women, men, and young people from vital health care services at Planned Parenthood-including cancer screenings, well-woman exams, and STI and HIV tests-and taking away health coverage from 18 million people”. And Clinton has been unequivocal in her support of the organization. “There has never been a more important election when it comes to women’s health and reproductive rights-and Planned Parenthood’s patients, providers, and advocates across the country are a crucial line of defense against the risky agenda being advanced by every Republican candidate for president”.
