ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) – Texas Sen.
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has waded back into the topic of eligibility for the US presidency, telling the Washington Post that rival Ted Cruz could run into trouble if he won the party’s nomination because he was born in Canada.
“How do you run against the Democrat, whoever it may be, and you have this hanging over your head if they bring a lawsuit?”
Cruz dismissed Trump’s comments, telling reporters in Iowa that the best way to respond was to laugh it off and talk about what he called “the issues that matter”.
The key statute of the order – which led to Aldo Maro Bellei, who was born in Italy to an American mother, to lose his citizenship – is that the citizen must live in the US for five years between the ages of 14 and 28. Ted Cruz renounced Canadian citizenship about two years before- in 2014. Most legal experts believe a child born outside the U.S.to at least one American parent qualifies as “natural born“.
Cruz is the first choice of 25% of likely GOP voters in the latest poll, while Trump is backed by 23%.
Even locked-in Trump supporters, like retired veteran Larry Warnell, say a third place victory could be a good thing in Iowa “because in the last couple of elections, number ones never finished, I don’t think”.
Republican presidential contender Donald Trump continued to raise doubts Wednesday about Sen. He said repeatedly that many people are aware of this topic and are mentioning it. The billionaire real estate mogul has claimed Cruz to be his friend and he respects him.
But that didn’t stop Trump from raising the issue Tuesday. He first reacted on Twitter, posting a link to a video from the 1970s television show “Happy Days” showing the character Fonzie water skiing over a shark.
Trump ascended to the heights of right-wing political circles in 2011 when he questioned President Barack Obama’s citizenship, suggesting that Obama was not born in the United States.
In an interview with David Axelrod on his podcast “The Axe Files”, out Thursday, Henry said her organization is going into “hyperdrive” because Trump appeals to some of her members because of the “terrible anxiety” some people in the working class feel.
Under the U.S. Constitution, the U.S. President must be a natural born citizen.
And if you’re not a naturalized citizen, then natural born is the only other option.
In an interview with ABC News in September, Trump said he did not think Cruz’s birthplace was an issue.
