Texas grandmother gives birth to granddaughter

Kelley McKissack and her husband, Aaron McKissack, struggled to have children for three years. “After numerous failed attempts we moved over to infertility treatment, which did turn into pregnancies but all turned into miscarriages”.

Tracey Thompson (left) has given birth to her own granddaughter after her daughter Kelley McKissack (right) suffered three miscarriages.

Though Ms Thompson was seven years past menopause, doctors were able to implant an embryo into her womb using state-of-the-art reproductive technology.

The newborn is a healthy 6-pound, 11-ounce baby girl. The child, named Kelcey, is biologically Tracey’s grandchild.

“It is such a blessing that I can do this for my daughter”, Tracey said. “It’s been many years since I’ve been pregnant”.

Ironically, when McKissack was a teenager, she asked Thompson that if she couldn’t have children herself then could she carry the child.

“The first and the third (trimesters) were really tough”, said Thompson.

At a press conference at the hospital, Kelley, who was present at the birth, described it as “the best gift… for a lifetime”.

And while this grandma says she won’t be giving her granddaughter a sibling – she did just endure her first C-section at 54 years old, after all! “We lean on each other for everything”, Thompson said.

“[The baby’s] heart rate started dropping too much and that was [the doctor’s] concern”, added Thompson. Although she was nervous, she was glad the staff encouraged her to watch Kelcey’s birth. The Medical Center of Plato in Texas called the procedure a “miracle”.
