The Eagles have set up an interview with Tom Coughlin, the two-time Super Bowl victor who resigned as Giants coach earlier this week, FoxSports and ESPN reported.
The Giants have to grant permission for the interview because Coughlin has a year left on his contract, according to Schefter, who says Big Blue “will not stand in (Coughlin’s) way”.
Coughlin announced his resignation on Monday after 3 seasons of losses.
Coughlin, 69, said in his exit press conference with the team that he was “not necessarily” done with coaching and that he’d be open to taking over for another team. Coughlin, who coached the Giants for 12 years, stepped down from his post on Monday.
Before Coughlin’s Giants tenure, he led the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars in the first eight years of their existence, a run that included four playoff appearance and two AFC Championship Game berths. However, per Ian Rapoport, Tom Coughlin is to have preliminary talks with the vacant head coaching job at the Philadelphia Eagles. This could be a brain-picking session for the front office, or they could legitimately be interested in hiring Coughlin to be their next head coach. The Giants have offered Coughlin a position within the organization, but Coughlin noted on Tuesday that he could still want to coach. Didn’t Bill Parcells leave the Giants and coach the Cowboys?
Coughlin to the Eagles would make for fascinating theater. Both coaches have playoff games on Saturday.
For instance, current offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo’s familiarity with the team can help and/or hurt.
The Eagles fired Chip Kelly before their regular-season finale, a win against the Giants.
