Last year, Old Crone Maggie Gyllenhaal was told at the age of 37 that she was too old to play the love interest of a 55-year-old man. “I’m 37 and I was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55”.
DeNiro, who Lawrence starred alongside in all three aforementioned Russell films, plays Lawrence’s father in “Joy“.
It is a mixed bag, that doesn’t have a bad amount of resonance and is confusing at times, especially with the plethora of flashbacks; but it’s hard to dislike anything with Jennifer Lawrence, one of our most beguiling actresses. “With Kelly and Michael” that she could be taking on the role of De Niro’s mom in an upcoming Russell project.
Lawrence, however, isn’t done playing characters who are clearly older than she is. She has become a young woman needing to own herself and protect herself, her true self. Joy at an early age got caught up in the melodrama that her mother, Terri portrayed by Virginia Madsen watched with intensity on a daily basis. “Most people will do anything to avoid that feeling”. I mean I went from being annoyed with Joy’s mother, to finding her beyond flawed because of her divorce.
Lawrence’s mature roles are hilariously spoofed in the mock trailer, which teases fans we will next see the actress play “an 89-year-old woman that looks like she’s 16”. So you find people who are loyal to you and will love you.
De Niro delivers a layered performance, one where the spectator is quite conflicted about how you feel about him. If you’re willing to fight for it, it will indeed come to fruition, it may not happen overnight, but when it does it will change your life. Remember, we’re in the late 1980s at this point in the story – right around the time a little network founded on the principles of Quality, Value and Convenience (that’s QVC to you and me) was gaining footing in a studio in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
