In the Eastern District of NY, for example, a 49-page grand jury indictment accuses Guzman of running a cartel that imported “multi-ton quantities of heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana into the United States” and of employing hit men who carried out murders, kidnapping, tortures and other acts of violence.

Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, right, is escorted by… Mexico has begun the process of extraditing Guzman to the United States, where he faces drug-trafficking charges, but that could take “a year or longer” because of legal challenges, said the head of Mexico’s extradition office, Manuel Merino.

The Oscar victor received some help from Latin actress Kate del Castillo as he attempted to set up his interview for Rolling Stone magazine, which was published online on Saturday (09Jan16).

Guzman was recaptured Friday, six months after breaking out of a Mexican prison. He cited one extradition case that took six years.

A Mexican official told CNN the pictures are legitimate and were taken by Mexican intelligence teams.

The drug lord was recaptured in his native Sinaloa state early Friday after a shootout that killed six of his people.

In a brief email exchange with The Associated Press on Monday, Penn simply stated, “I’ve got nothin’ to hide”, when asked about the government images. The photographs bolster the idea that authorities were tracking Penn’s movements in a bid to find the elusive Guzman.

They raided Guzman’s remote hideout a few days after the interview and narrowly missed capturing Guzman, whose July escape from Mexico’s top security prison – though a mile-long (1.5-kilometer) tunnel – had embarrassed President Enrique Pena Nieto and made his capture a national priority.

Mexican authorities had said they captured Guzman partly because his representatives contacted filmmakers and actors about making his biopic.

The video shows the moment Marines stormed Guzmán’s hideout in Los Mochis, Mexico.

“He was interested in seeing the story of his life told on film, but would entrust its telling only to Kate”, wrote Penn, who appears in a photo posted with the interview shaking hands with Guzman.
