The interstate was shut down in both directions near mile marker 168 at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
The crash took place on WB I-74 near the IN state line and weigh scales, Dearborn County deputies said.
Several semis were involved in the collision, WISH.com also reported. Some of the vehicles are overturned.
A second pileup, involving at least 10 vehicles, was reported along I-74 in southeastern in, the state police told The Weather Channel.
South of Indianapolis, a semi jack-knifed near Franklin exit, shutting down I-65 southbound at the exit for State Road 44. Sub-freezing temperatures and blowing snow have made roadways slick and hazardous across the state since the weekend. Emergency and towing crews blocking the eastbound lanes are expected to clear in about two hours. There was heavy snowfall at the time, with near white-out conditions and some icy patches. The snow closed several area roadways and caused numerous accidents Tuesday morning, officials said.
The Indiana Department of Transportation deployed almost 300 plow trucks across the state on Monday in preparation for the winter storm that was expected to make Tuesday’s commute hard.
