4.3-magnitude quake shakes Inland Empire — EARTHQUAKE

A moderate natural disaster jolted Vancouver Island, B.C., late Tuesday, and was widely felt across Whatcom County. He says he hasn’t heard of any major damage or recorded any aftershocks. Numerous aftershocks were a magnitude-3.8 or as small as a 0.7.

Hundreds of calls reportedly poured in to 911 from frightened people asking about or reporting the quake, prompting officials to remind them not to call unless it’s an immediate emergency. The quake originated about 52 kilometres below the earth’s surface. “It scared me, came from nowhere”.

Laura Melgoza, 23, a college student and cashier at WaBa Grill in San Bernardino, said she and her co-workers headed toward the front of the building as the restaurant shook.

Two of Metro Vancouver’s elevated rapid transit lines were shut down briefly while the guideways were checked, but TransLink said the system was back in operation within 90 minutes. Service resumed Wednesday morning.

Several people used Twitter to report noticeable shaking and swaying light fixtures, but tremors of that magnitude are typically not considered threatening.

Tuesday’s quake doesn’t suggest anything about when “The Big One” will strike, Cassidy added, but it should still serve as a reminder for families to get prepared.

One B.C. resident said they thought a tree had fallen on the house. YouTube user Darrell Vancouver posted footage of the quake from a security camera in Langley.

The city of Vancouver said there were no known reports of damage.

There have been nine earthquakes above magnitude-4 In the general area in the last 10 years.

“We gain more insight into what happened and what may happen in the future”, she said. “It woke up the whole neighbourhood”.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the quake, which was 19 kilometres north-north-east of Victoria at 4.8 magnitude in size.

At a Ralphs supermarket at 4444 University Parkway in north San Bernardino, the quake “went on for a long time”, said clerk Natalie Ramirez, and was followed by a milder aftershock.
