Tom Coughlin meets with 49ers about coach job

It’s also feasible to see the 49ers go with Coughlin based on his relationship with coaching great Bill Parcells.

The Giants won championships under Coughlin against the New England Patriots in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the 49ers are meeting with ex-Giants coach Tom Coughlin Tuesday.

He’s coming off one of his worst seasons, a 6-10 campaign in which his time management and judgment may have cost the Giants a couple of victories. He’s been an National Football League head coach for 20 seasons. He is a former position coach with the Giants under Bill Parcells, whom 49ers general manager Trent Baalke considers a mentor.

Reports were rampant the past few days the 49ers were targeting Hue Jackson, the Bengals offensive coordinator, for their head coaching opening.

DeFilippo also is from the York family’s home town of Youngstown, Ohio, which is where the interview took place. Tomsula got fired two hours after finishing this season with a 5-11 record. Coughlin will be the sixth candidate to interview for the 49ers job that belonged to Jim Tomsula for only one year.

Giants co-owner John Mara said last week that Coughlin agreed to help the organization in some capacity.

Coughlin turns 70 in August.

Coughlin guided the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars to a 68-60 record in eight seasons, claiming two division pennants and advancing to a couple of conference championship games in five seasons.

The post Report: Coughlin indeed interviewing as 49ers stretches into second week appeared first on 49ers Hot Read.

He previously served as the offensive coordinator of the California Golden Bears and the USC Trojans, and spent two seasons on the Oakland Raiders coaching staff. Should the 49ers decide to hire an experienced head coach with ties to the West Coast, Kelly would be the remaining option if Jackson accepts the Browns job.

Harbaugh, however, turned down the Dolphins for the 49ers. Without left guard Mike Iupati and right tackle Anthony Davis, the 49ers patched together a line that struggled to protect quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert. They already have Eric Mangini and Tony Sparano – both former Parcells assistants – on their coaching staff.
