The Martian Wins Golden Globe For Best Motion Picture Musical Or Comedy

January 12 21:26 2016

The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards were held Sunday night in Beverly Hills.

Other nominees in the category included Joy, Spy, The Big Short, and Trainwreck.

Singer Sam Smith told reporters that recording – let alone winning – the Best Original Song Golden Globe for “Writing’s On The Wall“, the theme song to the 007 film Spectre, was a dream come true.

In addition to Damon’s nomination, The Martian also scored a Best Director nod for Ridley Scott and a nomination for Best Motion Picture for a Comedy or Musical. Though Inarritu had a similar run at the Academy Awards last year with the best-picture winning “Birdman”, he won only a share of best screenplay at last year’s Globes. Scott was also nominated for Best Director, but he did not win in that category. The crowd greeted him with a standing ovation.

Though security was especially tight to guard against terrorism, the Gervais-led Globes evidenced little of the seriousness that marks most award shows or the teary-eyed acceptances speeches.

So, why was “The Martian” classified as a Comedy or Musical?

Best TV drama went to the upstart “Mr. Robot”, USA Network’s critically praised hacker drama, which beat out such heavyweights as Fox’s “Empire” and HBO’s “Game of Thrones“.

Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle“, about classical musicians in NY, was named best TV comedy. In addition, Christian Slater won best supporting actor in a TV series for his role as an anarchist on the show.

As expected, Pixar’s critical and commercial smash “Inside Out”, about the emotions fighting for control of an 11-year-old girl, won best animated movie.

Best foreign language film went to Hungary’s Laszlo Nemes’ “Son of Saul“, a harrowing view of life inside Auschwitz.

Oscar Isaac, a star of the box-office behemoth “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, won best actor in a miniseries for HBO’s “Show Me a Hero“. Fewer than 100 members cast ballots to determine the winners of each Golden Globes show, making it the most unpredictable of the major award shows. Oscar nominations will be announced Thursday, with the show following on February 28.
