Ice Cube is still Straight Outta Compton and still keeping it straight up, as shown by his response to the film’s awards snubs during a Thursday appearance on The Wendy Williams Show. I also give extra special props (and I can understand if you think this comes with a little bias) to a team that I think was egregiously overlooked by The Academy-Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, F. Gary Gray and Scott Bernstein – what you did was incredible. In today’s post, Straight Outta Compton’s Oscar-nominated screenwriters Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff reveal the logistical hurdles they had to overcome in writing a chaotic performance scene in their N.W.A biopic.
Some were outraged that Sylvester Stallone – widely seen as a sentimental favorite – was nominated for best supporting actor for “Creed” instead of Jordan. Foxx just sort of took over the stage for a minute with his own idea of what should have won, a la Kanye.
“There was more diversity in the 1936 Berlin Olympics”, tweeted one user, named Richard Hine, alongside a picture of African-American athletes at the games. And let me tell you something: The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. “It’s right there on the card”, Foxx said, doing Harvey verbatim.
But while Will Packer was admittedly furious about the lack of nominations for Straight Outta Compton, he made it clear that he has high hopes for drastically improving the Oscar ceremony and making it “feel as inclusionary as possible”. We will. And make no mistake, we have. “We’re used to the industry, really, you know, looking down on us”.
He adds: “To my Academy colleagues, WE HAVE TO DO BETTER”. “I’m not surprised. It’s the Oscars, they do what they do”. Although the Academy, now overseen by its first black president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, has started to broaden its voting membership, it will take a while before it’s no longer overwhelmingly white and male.
“The people loved the movie, the people supported the movie – number one at the box office, over $200 million worldwide”, he continued.
DARGIS Oh, I never thought “Straight Outta Compton” had a real shot for a best picture nod, even with the Academy’s recent – and laudable – attempts to diversify its membership.
