He notched another service-game win to push it to 5-1 and then broke Dolgopolov for the third time in the set to finish the match in clean straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, 6-1.
Federer’s last Grand Slam win came in Wimbledon in 2012 and the Swiss maestro will be keen to prove his detractors wrong in the current year.
Federer took his record over the Ukrainian to 3-0.
One day after Rafael Nadal crashed out of the Australian Open first round and seven matches went to five sets, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic helped restore order to the proceedings at Melbourne Park.
“Conditions are extremely quick, so you’re not going to find much rhythm”, said Roger Federer.
“I think he did well in Sydney, and that definitely also gave him a bit of a lift if he takes the positives out of the tournament, because wasting match point in a final is not a great thing”.
