No nerves for Oscar nominee DiCaprio because ‘the work is done’

January 23 20:01 2016

For DiCaprio it’s his fifth career nomination, but he’s still looking for his first win.

The Oscars were never far from the lips of the cast, especially whether it could be sixth time lucky for DiCaprio who picked up the best actor award at the Golden Globes on Sunday.

The Best Actress contenders include Cate Blanchett (“Carol“), Brie Larson (“Room”), Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”), Jennifer Lawrence (“Joy”), and Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years“).

Perhaps the DiCaprio curse even affects his directors, as The Revenant’s Alejandro G. Iñárritu is nominated for Best Director, though Variety predicts Mad Max: Fury Road’s George Miller is slated to take home the golden statue. “Boyhood” won for Best Picture-Drama at the Globes but Inarritu’s own film “Birdman” won the top spot at the Oscars.

It appeared that everyone, including Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs, got in on the action.

The Academy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC on February 28, with Chris Rock hosting for the second time. The intensity and film experience was there, and yet the iconic director did not receive any nominations. The best actor category also sees nominations for Michael Fassbender for biopic Steve Jobs, Matt Damon for space saga The Martian and Bryan Cranston for Trumbo, in which he portrays real-life Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo.

Left on the outside were Todd Haynes’ acclaimed lesbian romance Carol and the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton.

After seemingly slipping in an unpredictable awards season, “Spotlight” showed particularly strength Thursday, landing six nominations including best director for McCarthy, best screenplay for McCarthy and Josh Singer and best supporting actor for Mark Ruffalo. Expectedly, there are still a lot of surprises and disappointments with the Academy’s decisions, which have become a yearly debate for the fans.

And, yes, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens“, the year’s biggest movie – and now all-time domestic box office champ – scored a measly five nominations, four in technical categories and one for John Williams’s indestructible score. We have got to speed it up. No best actor nomination for Johnny Depp in “Black Mass“, for those keeping score in Boston.

But this year’s expected nominees already contain box-office hits (“The Martian“, the recently released “The Revenant“) and a number of major studio releases.
