The “Star Wars” move also gives director Rian Johnson more time to work, as the movie isn’t set to start shooting until next month, according to the official Star Wars website.
First The Force Awakens overtook the original Avatar as the highest grossing domestic movie of all time – although its worldwide record appears safe – and now moving Episode VIII to a Dec 15, 2017 release date seemed to have trigged Avatar 2 to change plans as well. Hopefully, in the meantime, people don’t lose interest while enduring the extra wait.
It was around this time past year that director James Cameron announced the film might not be ready as soon as he had hoped.
Cameron had originally meant to create four more sequels to the famous film, but his contract has limited him to three sequels.
However, when the project was last delayed, the studio’s Chairman-CEO Jim Gianopulos confessed, “Jim Cameron has his own pace”.
Back at the tail end of 2009, I got the chance to sit in a huge cinema with some silly glasses on my face in order to witness the rebirth of 3D movies and one of the biggest action spectacles ever filmed/rendered. And now the sequel is experiencing yet another not-so-surprising delay as reports are coming in that Avatar 2 won’t be facing Star Wars: Episode VIII in a mega geek showdown for box office glory. However, Cameron has spoken at length about the ambitious nature of the Avatar sequels, exploring some of Pandora’s moons and even underwater cultures. Disney must have known it wouldn’t face competition from Avatar 2 during the busy month of December, which would risk hurting Star Wars VIII’s bottom line. If Avatar 2 sticks to the Christmas date, it will be just a week of a gap between the two. The original Avatar took five years to hit screens. “The studio refused to comment on the report while individuals close to the situation confirmed it. ‘Avatar 2” targeted to release on Christmas in 2017 Some sources cited the production preparation as the main cause of the delay.
