The problem, she explained, was that she had only just discovered the ticket in a pair of jeans – which she had just washed.
The winning numbers were 26, 27, 46, 52 and 58.
A National Lottery spokesperson said: “We’re desperate to find this mystery ticket-holder and unite them with their winnings – this unbelievable prize could really make a huge difference to somebody’s life”.
National newspapers including The Times and The Daily Mail are reporting that a woman bought the ticket she believes was the victor at Ambleside News in Warndon.
Natu Patel, who owns the newsagent, said: “The lady came in yesterday, she was rather nervous”.
The woman told the Times that she had found the ticket in the pocket of her jeans and had dried it out with a hairdryer.
Should there be enough evidence to convince Camelot that the claim is legitimate, the jackpot will be paid out 180 days after the draw. If good causes are close to your heart, you can do that.
The numbers drawn were 10, 12, 13, 19, 43 and 45, and the bonus number was 5.
A Camelot spokesman confirmed that it had advised Mr Patel’s customer to contact them in writing.
Even though the prize total was shared, the sum is still the biggest win since the National Lottery was launched in November 1994.
Camelot said it will investigate and asked the woman to send them the ticket within the next 30 days.
The prize money is half the record Lotto jackpot win – shared with a couple from Scotland, who claimed their prize within days of the January 9 draw. But no date, no bar code, no serial number and the right numbers?
