Suspended JD(U) legislator Sarfaraz Alam was on Sunday arrested for allegedly abusing a Delhibased couple on board Rajdhani Express.

“The Jokihat MLA Sarfaraj Alam has been arrested as the charges made against him under various sections have been found to be true. We are now quesstioning him”.

Earlier, Alam had denied the charge and said that he was not on that train.

Patna superintendent of rail police (SRP) Prakash Nath Mishra said that the MLA, his bodyguard Inzamamul Haq and friend Kamre Sayeed were arrested for travelling without ticket and misbehaving with a woman passenger. His arrest on Sunday came barely hours after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, presiding over Karpoori Jayanti function said that in Bihar there was “rule of law and it applied equally to all, even if the accused happens to be a ruling party MLA”.

Alam, son of Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Mohammad Taslimuddin and third term MLA from Jokihaat in Araria district, has been summoned by police to appear before GRP Patna on Saturday to record his statement in connection with the incident.

Stating that he is a law abiding citizen and respects judiciary, the JD(U) MLA said there was a “high level conspiracy” behind the allegation. Meanwhile, the Delhi-based couple, who were allegedly abused by the Bihar legislator triggering the chain of events, wrote to the Railway Police that they do not want to further pursue the matter any more.

He did not show any ticket/pass or coupon (required by an MLA for travelling in the train). “He is still being questioned by the police”, A.S. Thakur, a senior Government Railway Police official, told journalists at the Patna Junction. “The police has freedom to act lawfully against those breaking law”.
