Geneseo police: Man ‘distraught’ over breakup stabbed ex-girlfriend, man and himself

January 25 20:02 2016

The police identified 24-year-old Hutchinson, who was in his fourth year at State University of NY at Geneseo. Colin Kingston, a 24-year-old Geneseo man and former student, had somehow made his way inside, say police.

Kingston allegedly stabbed the two victims with “a large knife” believed to have been purchased at a retail store in the area, before killing himself with the same weapon, police said. Before he killed himself, Kingston called his father, Szczensiak said.

The father called police, who went to Annese’s residence on the second-floor of a house converted into apartments that were mostly occupied by members of the women’s basketball team, Szczesniak said. Police said that Kingston had admitted to having suicidal thoughts after the breakup.

The couple may have been asleep when Kingston entered the woman’s room in a house where female basketball players lived. He won a gold medal with Team Canada in 2012 IIHF Inline Hockey World Championships, and spent last summer back in B.C.as a firefighter for B.C. Forest Service. Hutchinson wrote an online commentary for the college about his desire to be a full-time firefighter, including a photo of him dressed in firefighting gear. Annese and Hutchinson were students at Geneseo. The assailant was identified as Colin Kingston, 24, of Geneseo.

Annese was a senior from Webster near Rochesterwho was a well-known member of the women’s basketball team.

In a press conference today, the police confirmed that incident was indeed a murder-suicide and added that Kingston had killed Amnese and Hutchinson with little resistance, as there was no sign of forced entry or a struggle.

Szczesniak reportedly said it was too early in the investigation to label any of the three dead people a suspect, but it was believed that one may have been the perpetrator. “We know we can lean on each other in times like this and that’s so important to help us get through it”.

His son, Colin, a 2009 graduate of Geneseo High School and a 2013 graduate of SUNY Geneseo, was working at the farm at the time of his death, according to his LinkedIn page.

The Geneseo Fire Chief says Hutchinson was a real role model.

“We think our students will be comforted by keeping as much stability in their lives as possible, even during this hard period of mourning”, she said.

The young man was in his fourth year at the school and was studying geography and business. He had previously attended the school but was not registered for the spring semester, university officials have said.

“I can say that Matt was really in the upper echelon of our department”, Chanler said.
