No. 11 Virginia stuns Wake Forest 72-71 on Thompson’s late 3

January 27 20:04 2016

The University of Virginia men’s basketball team trailed by 10 points with 1:23 left in the game, before unleading a furious rally and edging Wake Forest 72-71.

UVA was led by 28 points by Malcolm Brogdon, which tied his career high, as well as 17 points from Anthony Gill who was 7-12 from the field.

The result dropped Wake Forest to 10-10 overall and 1-7 in the ACC and gives the Cavaliers a shot of confidence when it comes to winning away from home.

Hield, the nation’s No. 2 scorer, made nine of 12 shots, including five of eight three-point shots, and seven of eight free throws. The Cavaliers scored twice as many points in the second half – 48 – as they did in the first.

Crawford then missed his first free throw, but made the second and the Demon Deacons set up a full-court press, which Hall broke before finding Thompson for that huge 3 that stood after a brief official review and gave the Cavaliers their first ACC road victory this season.

The Deacs had a strong start to the game, leading for more than 16 of the opening 20 minutes. He said the last time he made a game-winner was in the third or fourth grade on “a shot similar to that”.

“We don’t have Krispy Kreme in Charlottesville, so I got my mom to bring some to the game, and we would not be able to enjoy those unless that shot went in”, Gill told NBC 29. He says he’s not frustrated by reduced playing time because “I’m going to do whatever for the team”.

Jonathan Holton had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 9 West Virginia to a 70-55 victory over Kansas State, giving the Mountaineers (17-3, 6-2 Big 12) a sweep of the season series.

UVa returns to action Saturday at #16 Louisville. “We know that the league that we play in, night in and night out, it’s going to be a beast”, Wake Forest coach Danny Manning said after the Demon Deacons’ 77-63 loss Saturday at Miami (Fla.).
