Driving to Dodger Stadium? Take the new Vin Scully Avenue

January 29 21:41 2016

Several members of the Dodgers sat in the Los Angeles City Council chambers Friday to watch history unfold off the field.

While there are still thirty days to go before the motion is official, allowing any citizens upset with the decision to voice their complaint, I’m also fairly certain that not wanting Vin Scully Avenue is a treasonable offense. “We had a little radio, as all young boys and girls did in that time period”.

Councilman Paul Krekorian said the recognition “is a few decades overdue”.

More than a dozen players and manager Dave Roberts were present for the vote. The team moved to L.A. and had its first season in Southern California in 1958.

“There’s no better way to recognize such an iconic Dodger as Hall of Famer Vin Scully than naming a street after him”, team president & CEO Stan Kasten said in a statement.

If the motion is passed by the Council, Los Angeles’ city engineer will begin the process of changing the street’s name.

Scully usually resists such tributes, but said this one overwhelmed him. Now 88, Scully will return for his 67th season this summer.

You have a street named after you. The O’Malley family continued to own the Dodgers until their sale to the Fox Group in 1997.

With its approval of the change, the council took time to heap praise upon Scully, who has called Dodgers games for 66 seasons and plans to retire after the 2016 campaign.

Councilman Paul Koretz said Scully’s voice had served as a backdrop to “my entire life”.
