In addition to this, Avita Water has partnered with the SelfMadeFoundation.org to help the people suffering from Flint’s water crisis.
Fresh bottled water was placed in a state building in Flint beginning a year ago, as concerns about the city’s water quality were rising but before lead was discovered.
For many, it echoes the lackluster federal response to New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
I can not sit by idly while Gov. Rick Snyder continues to bring shame to our great state of MI. The city notified water customers at the time that it was in violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act but described the water as safe to drink. Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof, though, said Snyder has done a “really good job” releasing information.
Meanwhile, US Congress has proposed $US400 million in federal aid which could help replace the city’s lead pipes. The Republican governor said the funding will provide immediate resources in Flint, but is not the end of state assistance. “It’s got to be based on tests and science”.
Marc Edwards said the city’s water system is still recovering after being without corrosion control for 18 months. In that time, it’s estimated as many as 12,000 children had been exposed to lead poisoning, causing irreversible damage to developing brains and nervous systems.
“It just shows us, when people need help, Chicago’s willing to step up and help”, said Washington.
His staff issued a statement to AP that cited his efforts in urban areas such as Detroit, which also has a large black population. But the plan to use that source was evaluated and rejected by the city’s emergency manager in 2012, according to a deposition. We don’t see ourselves as businesses, we see what we do as a public service. “The kids, they’re just like in action mode”. Donations have surpassed that, coming in well over 100,000 bottles.
Flint has since reconnected to Detroit water.
The city is 57 percent black, and 42 percent of its people live in poverty.
As for how long it will be until the water in Flint is safe to drink, the governor said he can’t yet make any promises. “It’s disgusting. Because like I say my husband is a heart patient he don’t feel like getting our everyday he can’t carrying that water”, said Cherry Mason. They would never do this to Ann Arbor. All across America, there are over 50 cities which have similar conditions as bad as Flint, and no one knows who to talk to about a resolution of these issues.
Snyder said he hopes the Flint tragedy can be used as a wake-up call for MI to address other problems with underground infrastructure.
MI is one of two states to wholly exempt the governor’s office from public-records requests. We can’t politicize water. “That’s what this is, and that’s what created this”.
