Juan Mata feels the frustration after Manchester United’s defeat to Southampton

Sportsmail has been told Van Gaal will attend a meeting where he will be reassured of his future by United’s top brass – including executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Louis van Gaal’s men sit fifth in the table following this weekend’s results and are trailing leaders Leicester City by 10 points.

Cole is apparently closing in on a move to LA Galaxy after the termination of his contract with Roma and in the midst of all this he was being linked to Manchester United. The Dutch coach, who is now in Holland for his daughter’s birthday, has come under heavy criticism this season for United’s indifferent form.

It is also believed there are no plans to have one on Monday with the focus on Friday’s FA Cup tie at Derby County, a tournament United have not won for 12 years.

“I know that everyone, from the owners and Louis Van Gaal and his team, is working extremely hard to turn that around”.

Van Gaal accepts he is failing to deliver attractive football and convince the fans he is turning things round.

“I’m very disappointed that I can not reach the expectations of the fans”.

Writing in his weekly blog on the United website, Mata said: “Once again, I’m writing with a bad taste”.

Van Gaal was more forgiving of the fans’ reaction: “They are right (to boo)”.

Fans of the Red Devils showed their discontent towards Van Gaal on Saturday after United failed to score at home for the seventh time this season. And we want to fight for this trophy. We must get better results for you, I hope this attractive competition will provide them.

Per Kieran Gill of the Daily Mail, Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes, contacted Woodward after United’s Saturday defeat to remind him that the Portuguese is willing and available should the club’s hierarchy choose to sack Van Gaal.

“It’s another tough moment, for you and for us, but we must get through this”.
