Louis van Gaal offered to resign after Southampton loss

Louis van Gaal is under pressure at Old Trafford and widespread reports this week suggested the Dutchman offered his resignation to Woodward following the 1-0 defeat against Southampton last time out.

But claims that he had approached Woodward over the weekend with an offer to leave are wide of the mark, Goal has discovered.

Manchester United, who have managed to win just two of their last 10 league games, now find themselves fifth in the standings with 37 points from 23 games, 10 adrift of leaders Leicester City.

Van Gaal returned to his homeland to celebrate his daughter’s birthday but is expected to be back at United’s Aon Training Complex on Tuesday morning.

“I’m very disappointed that I can not reach the expectations of the fans”. “They have – or they had – great expectations of me and I can not fulfill them”.

Stats released this evening revealed that Manchester United have had fewer shots on target at home this season than any other side in the top four divisions in England.

Van Gaal could still be considering his future after speaking to his family and will be acutely aware that the atmosphere at Old Trafford is throwing more and more hostile.

While Manchester United’s board have remained supportive of him, it seems that the manager is now unsure of whether he can turn around their fortunes, and his career with the club will come down to his meeting with Woodward today.

Dissent is rife in the dressing room as frustrations continue to grow with Van Gaal’s decision-making and tactics, with senior players also sharing the same concerns and voicing their frustrations with their manager. They have failed to score in the first half of a game since September – and only twice all season.
