Coming off the biggest win of his career, it’s smart for Alvarez to look for a big-name opponent for his next gig.
“Canelo is the biggest star in the sport and as he demonstrated against James Kirkland and Miguel Cotto a year ago, he is only getting better”.
Nevertheless, Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan is happening. Khan’s run of success over the last few years (5-0 since December 2012) has been less-than-impressive, since he hasn’t really gotten to face decent competition. “Fans are in for a great fight on May 7.” he added.
We all know Khan is beatable but so is Alvarez!
Khan’s last stepped in the ring during a May 29, 2015 bout in which he out-pointed Chris Algieri at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Alvarez is no Algieri.
Perhaps one of the best kept secrets in boxing, it was announced yesterday that the Brit would face the fearsome Mexican at a catchweight of 155 lbs.
That’s not to say he’s unbeatable. Mayweather was a savant of boxing mechanics.
Canelo is the younger, hungrier fighter and he has a better track record.
“It’s eight pounds difference in his weight but Amir is a big guy as well. He has great boxing ability – we know that”. We don’t wonder that about Khan.
It would take more than some playful banter to persuade “Money” to come back from retirement. He’s certainly not beaten anyone to suggest he might be, and he doesn’t even seem willing to prove he’s the best 147-pounder from the United Kingdom. “He’ll lose in that fight”, Brook told Sky Sports News HQ. Khan versus Alvarez is pure promotional nonsense.
“It’s definitely a courageous move from Khan to go from lightweight to light-welterweight, welterweight and then middleweight”, said Fury. Alvarez fights at 155 lbs, which is five pounds under the middleweight limit and just one over the junior middleweight limit. “I don’t even see the fight doing as well as Canelo’s two fights against Erislandy Lara and Alfredo Angulo, both of which brought in around 300,000 PPV buys”. Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena will be the venue, with Canelo’s WBC Middleweight title on the line. On the other hand Alvarez would only need a big enough opening to land a clean shot on Khan’s chin to take him out. “Obviously if it’s a big fight, he stands up for it”.
What is not in doubt is the fact that the fight set for Cinco de Mayo weekend is a hugely intriguing and fascinating prospect. That ship sailed when Pacquiao agreed to fight Timothy Bradley in April.
But Khan’s camp were also said to be interested in a lucrative Battle of Britain showdown with Brook and negotiations with Eddie Hearn’s promotions company Matchroom Boxing had reportedly taken place.
