Edmonton Oilers activate rookie forward Connor McDavid from injured reserve

McDavid had a goal and two assists in his return as Edmonton snapped a three-game losing skid with a 5-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday.

Back on November 3, McDavid suffered a broken clavicle in the Oilers game against Philadelphia.

Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid (97) and Adam Clendening (27) celebrate McDavid’s goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets during the second period of an NHL hockey game in Edmonton, Alberta, Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016.

On Tuesday night, the No. 1 pick in the 2015 draft skated down the ice, split two defenders and then faked out Blue Jackets goalie Joonas Korpisalo to give Edmonton its second goal of the game.

“I actually shut my phone off to spend some time with my daughter and it wasn’t until after the game when she turned on my phone to google directions and my phone just blew up”, says Chamakese.

He hasn’t even played one shift with Eberle, who was out for the start of the season with a shoulder injury. Later, McDavid assisted on power play goals by Benooit Pouliot and Jordan Eberle as the Oilers pulled away.

“He’s special. I think we have a much better chance to win that game if he isn’t in the lineup”.

McLellan said the plan for McDavid is to “open the door and say go, ” but said they’ll be watching his minutes to see how he is doing.

McDavid’s return has provided fans reason to enjoy the second half despite the Oilers’ 20-26-5 record, and the team’s core is healthy again save for Nugent-Hopkins.

If McDavid plays all 31 remaining games, he will finish with 45.

A resurgent end to the season for McDavid would provide some hope for the future, as the Oilers appear set to miss the playoffs for the 10th straight time.

McDavid has been the marquee patient on a star-studded Oilers injury list that has included Eberle and Nail Yakupov.

Leafs’ forward Leo Komarov scored with 11 minutes left in the period, and Nazem Kadri tied the game up just two minutes later, eventually sending the game to overtime. His combination of speed and skill have scouts calling him a generational player on par with Sidney Crosby. He is the only rookie this season with more points than games played.
