In retrospect I always wondered how it would have felt to drink lemonade with Mrs. Bush at the White House but unfortunately I had to turn her down.
Barbara Bush initially declined to show her true feelings about Trump, the man who’s been tearing into her son for more than six months as someone who’s “dumb as a rock” and “low energy”.
Who will gang up on Marco Rubio?
Barbara Bush said she “has faith” that her son, who placed a disappointing sixth in the Iowa caucuses, will prevail. Jeb Bush and Chris Christie found themselves deploying the same line of attack, both accusing Rubio of a lackluster set of accomplishments. Some say he’s inconsistent.
So he tossed out the question at an event before last Monday’s Iowa caucuses.
Rubio dominated his mainstream rivals in Iowa.
Here’s how the fight has played out this week.
Jeb Bush is throwing some Twitter shade at Donald Trump for getting snowed out of New Hampshire on Friday and canceling a campaign event. He described them as talented speakers, but not leaders. His wife and grown sons joined him here on the campaign trail in recent days as did his 91-year-old mother, the former first lady Barbara Bush.
After a private tour of the facility, Bush spoke to company employees and fielded questions.
He had harsher words for Trump’s more, er, Trump-ian strategy.
“The headlines were ‘Trump comes in second”.
So as she was finishing her walk she came right up to me and asked, “Could I ask you a question?” Ted Cruz, the fiery conservative who won Iowa. It places his campaign on life support going to New Hampshire and makes his nomination very unlikely.
But his tone quickly changed.
Let’s just say the folks out here have a different style to them – a more brash, direct, we-mean-business attitude. Chris Christie’s insults earned only a three-second rebuttal.
Another sign of the new dynamic: Clinton reported that her campaign had raised $15 million in January – $5 million less than Sanders and the first time she’s been outraised by her opponent. The man said wanted to figure out a way to “legitimize” people like Fernando. So what was the great shock? Come on. It’s silly….
Whether he’ll get that opportunity or not, Bush’s pride in Florida and the work that he accomplished as governor was clear and unmistakable through his speech and the answers he delivered to workers in a factory hundreds of miles from Tallahassee. In December, the two gave $7,400 to Rubio’s campaign. It shows the MSNBC “Morning Joe” interview of Santorum, who endorsed Rubio this week, struggling to list anything Rubio has done of significance in the Senate during an interview on Thursday. And I eventually found some Rubio supporters. He is riding high after Iowa.
Bush has been following the New Hampshire playbook, grinding out town halls, attending house parties, and dropping by diners and coffee shops.
“Secretary Clinton does represent the establishment”, he said. And, if we do that, we will win.
“I want to win, though”.
“Just watched Jeb’s ad where he desperately needed mommy to help him”.
When reporters asked Rubio Thursday to respond to his critics, he hedged. “I think he’s the right guy to lead us forward”, Jindal said on Fox News. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
Rubio embodies his message about the American Dream. If corporations moving jobs offshore don’t like his tax plan, said Trump, “You can tell them to go f*** themselves”.
But whether Rubio can remain aloof and ignore the critics through primary day on Tuesday isn’t clear. Senior adviser Tad Devine says Sanders is likely to appear on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live”, where David will be the host this weekend. And it’s much harder to dodge the blows when everyone will be in the same boxing ring. Marco Rubio at 19 percent, Ohio Gov. John Kasich at 13 percent, and ex-Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 10 percent.
