While the closing of all 56 Marinello Schools has displaced 4,300 students nationwide, Bellus is giving all 40 Marinello students a place to continue their education.
The Office of Federal Student Aid found that Marinello was underawarding federal aid to students and “knowingly” requesting federal aid for students based on invalid high school diplomas, according to a statement from the department of education.
School officials told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that about 5,000 students and employees will receive transcripts and information about transfers next week. The National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Scientists had previously certified Marinello as compliant with industry standards, allowing them to participate in federal aid programs such as Pell grants and student loans.
More than 350 Nevada cosmetology students are impacted by the closure. The schools, like most for-profit technical colleges, rely on such aid money for most of their funding. The bill ensures students have access to important and accurate information, strengthens oversight and regulation, and holds for-profit schools and their executives accountable for violations and poor performance. “But when it gets past a certain point, they have to pay for that because it costs us money to have the lights on and teachers there”.
The Marinello schools have until February 16 and CSI has until February 12 to submit evidence to dispute the department’s findings.
“We want you to know that we did everything in our power to avoid this unfortunate conclusion and keep your school open”, the letter reads. The chain also has locations in California, Kansas, Utah and Nevada.
“We are hoping to make the transition in Marinello students’ education as smooth as possible during this hard time”, the agency said in a message to students.
While the letter was distributed via email, many of her students learned the news through social media that morning, Larson said. “If a student misses an excessive number of classes, we offer makeup hours for them to come in”.
But that’s of little outcome to this skin care student who says she was just weeks from graduating.
“We are confident we would have been able to address them given Marinello’s long history of compliance with regulatory requirements”, the statement said. The Department’s actions have deprived Marinello’s students of the opportunity to complete their education at Marinello without interruption. “It’s a good value and i’m going to miss it”. The meeting is Wednesday from 10 a.m.to 6 p.m.at the Market Street Promenade campus.
