Bernie Sanders made a cameo on “Saturday Night Live” with Larry David, who regularly impersonates him.
“Bern Your Enthusiasm” merged David’s awkward, neurotic portrayal of himself from his HBO show Curb Your Enthusiam with his depiction of the Vermont senator, making for a presidential candidate that rankles his peers and ultimately loses the Iowa caucuses because of his germaphobia.
The scene ended happily when it turned out that the boat had actually crashed into the Liberty Island and was already in NY.
Ever since Larry David returned to Saturday Night Live with a dead-on hilarious impression of Bernie Sanders, fans have been going insane for the duo to unite.
After David’s first appearance as Sanders, when he teased him for his clothes and rough-around-the-edges look, the senator joked with reporters that he did in fact own more than one pair of underwear.
After David’s character called him a socialist, Sanderswitzki went on to explain that his ideals fall more in line with “democratic socialism”, a term the presidential candidate often uses when talking about his beliefs. Finally, David said he deserved a seat because he was richer than the other passengers. “Democratic socialism”, Sanders corrects.
Having worked at “SNL” for eight seasons from the late 1990s to mid-2000s, I can tell you that the cheers Sanders received were off the charts, even compared to special appearances by A-list celebrities. “She didn’t have the decency to give me a wipe”, David said. He starred as “Bernie Sanderswitzky”, who plans on changing his name once he arrives in America so it doesn’t “sound so Jewish”.
The bit ended with the pair agreeing not to share a cab together, though they appeared shortly after to introduce the evening’s musical guest, The 1975. At the campaign office, “Sanders” comes under fire from staffers, who eerily resemble Susie Essman, Jeff Garlin and J.B. Smoove (and are played by Cecily Strong, Bobby Moynihan and Jay Pharoah, respectively).
What do you think will happen in New Hampshire? Larry David’s monologue was quite different with some off-color humor about women with eating disorders and being the master of his domain. When asked what the difference between socialism and democratic socialism, Sanders said, “YYYYUUUGGGEEEE”.
