Third year student of Delhi University (DU) Arzu Singh was found dead in a house in North-West Delhi on Sunday.
Police said the body of Arzoo Singh was found in a semi-burnt condition from her friend’s house in Model Town area of north Delhi.
On Tuesday, Khatri allegedly strangulated her and dumped her body in a shaft at his residence in Gurmandi locality which comes under the jurisdiction of Model Town police station. The crime came to light only on Sunday, five days after the murder, when the neighbours complained of a “terrible stench” emanating from the suspect’s residence, where he had dumped the body in a shaft.
“The next morning, we went to her college where we came to know that she used to meet Khatri, who lives in our neighbourhood, even after the talks of their marriage failed four months back”, she said. Both wanted to get married, but Khatri’s family members were against the marriage.
“Arzoo went to college on February 2 like any other day”.
“If the boy’s family felt that she will create problems during Navin’s wedding with another girl, they should have talked to us, rather than doing this to my sister”, she told ANI. “He broke down during sustained interrogation and was arrested“, said Vijay Singh, DCP, northwest. “A murder case was immediately registered and the accused was arrested”, the police official said. Arzu was missing since February 2.
Akanksha, the victim’s cousin, said that they lodged a police complaint on February 2 when Arzoo did not return. He allegedly abducted and killed her two days before he married another woman, said sources. They have also detained a few other members of the family for questioning.
