The frightening ordeal was captured on video from the scene and showed people climbing out of the front and top of the bus. We thank the First Responders who are helping everyone who was on the bus today. All passengers and rescuers were out of the wreckage by 1 p.m.
Following the crash, Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy issued a statement. The highway remains closed at Exit 61.
The Madison crash happened amid falling snow and blustery winds but it was not immediately clear exactly what role weather played in the crash.
Officials from Yale-New Haven Hospital said they have received at three patients and officials from Middlesex Hospital said the Shoreline Medical Center received 16 patients. The rest are being transported to local hospitals.
“They initially expected worse in the field and told us to prepare for the worst”, he said. These preliminary numbers may change as the patients are assessed, hospital spokesman Mark D’Antonio said.
Parwani said the hospital plans for disasters such as this all year round, to respond to different types of accidents and disasters.
Passengers who were able to walk off the bus were taken to Madison Town Campus where the Red Cross was called out to assist them.
There was no immediate word on the number or extent of injuries or how many passengers were on the bus at the time of the accident.
Officials say there were 70 people aboard the bus when the vehicle slid off the road shortly after noon, 30 of whom were injured.
Firefighters from Madison and Guilford were on the way to the scene, as were several ambulances.
Up to 50 people may have been on the bus when it flipped, according to NBC Connecticut.
