Newton defends actions after Super Bowl

Cam Newton had his first chance to meet with the media Tuesday since walking off stage shortly after the Carolina Panthers lost to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50.

“Show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser”, Newton told reporters gathered at his locker on Tuesday in Charlotte.

– Cam Newton said he has no apologies for his post game actions after the Super Bowl at the end of season news conference Tuesday.

“But I know who I am and I’m not about to conform nor bend for anybody’s expectations because your or anybody else’s expectations will never exceed mine”.

Newton was a shell of himself thanks to a dominant defensive effort by Denver, which shut down Newton and the league’s No. 1 offense, and he clearly wasn’t happy after the loss, which is well within his right. “We came into the game with confidence and energy and came out with the win”, he said. “At the end of the day, when you invest so much time and sacrifice so much and things don’t go as planned, the emotions take over”.

“That’s who he is”.

Rivera, who has won NFL Coach of the Year two of the last three seasons, is back too. “If you write him off, you’re wrong”, Miller said on ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike. “I’m not here to tell him, you know, “You should be doing this” or ‘You should be doing that'”.

“We’re the greatest defence to ever play the game”. “Getting Derek Wolfe (four years, $36.7 million) done was the first step, and we want to get Danny and Malik done”. But make no mistake; this was a Denver defensive masterpiece, orchestrated by defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and executed by more than a dozen focused, prepared and ruthless defensive Broncos.

In some past Carolina defeats, he’s sat distraught at his locker still in his uniform for more than 30 minutes after the conclusion of the game.

This year’s audience numbers were down compared to last year, when the Super Bowl XLIX clash between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks drew a record 114.4 million viewers.

At one point, his attention appeared to drift to listening to Broncos players who were celebrating and talking about their win on the other side of the interview room.

“An unbelievable season. We did what a lot of people didn’t think we could do”, Newton said. As long as Newton realizes his postgame performance gives his detractors the right to hate him and takes away his right to complain about that, what’s the issue? People take losses, not just football losses, but personal losses different ways.

Then again, maybe Newton really doesn’t care what you think about him. But at least now the debate about why Newton didn’t jump on the football – arguably the most important moment of the game – can be put to rest.

Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman refused to criticize his franchise quarterback for the way he acted after the game. As coach Gary Kubiak said Monday morning, he wants to hold onto the championship feeling for a while before looking ahead.

“The truth of the matter is I’m not trying to be that person, nor am I trying to be that person”. If you want me to be this type of person I’m not that.
