Just then, a similarly dressed Sanders emerged from behind the set screaming for David to hold on. “I don’t pop, I’m not a popper”, David said as Sanders. “Enough is enough. We need to unite and work together”, Sanders said after introducing himself as “Bernie Sanderswitzky”.
David, who previously played Sanders on SNL in last October, chimes in, “Sounds like socialism to me”.
“Democratic socialism”, clarified Sanders, whose character was named Bernie Sanderswitsky but planned to change it once he got to America, “so it doesn’t sound so Jewish”.
“Share a cab?” Sanders asked David.
“Bernie Sanders, I’m one of your biggest fans”.
Bernie Sanders and Larry David finally met live on Saturday night, on “Saturday Night Live” – and things got prettay, prettay Jewish.
“Yeah, that’ll trick ’em”, David jokes.
“SNL“, which is known for its surprise cameos, has not confirmed Sanders will make an appearance. Melissa McCarthy is returning to host after a year away from the show, and she will be joined by a musical guest in Kanye West who always likes to do big, experimental pieces during some of his performances. Thanks to “SNL“, more people heard Sanders is a “democratic socialist”- and for some that’s enough reason to vote against him. In November, business mogul Donald Trump hosted the show.
Hold on, hold on, wait a second.
However, the standout Sanders sketch of the night was “SNL’s “Bern Your Enthusiasm“, which was a riff on David’s hit HBO show”.
If Sanders loses the nomination, it is all but guaranteed that some horse race-following pundit or another (or maybe all of them) will point to this sketch as a harbinger of doom.
And Larry David’s impression of Sanders has helped him. The pieces were in place for an interesting evening live from NY, even if David had been telling viewers, “You don’t have to watch” in the promos.
Taking a break from the campaign trail in New Hampshire, Sanders likely will go toe-to-toe with his show-biz doppelganger, and perhaps demonstrate a sense of humor, before a national audience.
