Forecast: Snow moving out, temps continue to drop

February 12 02:36 2016

In addition to the cold and wind, there will be a spray of light lake effect snow showers southeast of Lake Ontario. Though temperatures are in the teens for some of the Greater Cincinnati area, many locations will experience single-digit, freezing cold. As the leading edge of colder air approaches, winds will pick up out of the northwest, gusting over 30 miles per hour.

In Boston, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a statement on Thursday warning of “potentially life-threatening cold” for the weekend, with below zero temperatures on Sunday, morning including in Providence, Hartford and Worcester.

A cold dome of Canadian high pressure behind only our third Arctic front of the year will clear skies partially and push down temperatures.

A few record lows are possible Sunday morning in the Northeast. They get cold too! Overnight lows will drop down to slightly below zero, and temperatures on Valentine’s Day will be in the teens.

Instead, for Syracuse and points south and west, lows Saturday should be between -5 and -10 degrees.

Despite the sun on Friday, temperatures will struggle to reach the mid 20s on Friday. The cold weather will nearly certainly improve ice conditions but could make things pretty uncomfortable for all but the most hardened ice anglers. Even those that enjoy the cold and snow will want to stay indoors due to dangerously cold wind chills and sub-zero temperatures. But with morning lows near zero, if not below zero, a wind of just 5-10mph will drop wind chills well below zero.

Wind chill watches have been issued for areas north of the city in anticipation of temperatures that will feel like minus-20 degrees.

As the arctic air moves across the Great Lakes, heavy lake-effect snow is expected to continue in Cleveland, Buffalo and Syracuse through at least Friday.

Saturday: Mostly sunny with a high near 15 degrees.
