Ellen Degeneres donates $500000 to Detroit Public Schools

DeGeneres’ substantial gift comes at a critical time for the beleaguered school system, which has been shrouded in accusations of grosse negligence and endangering the well being of students and teachers.

So, in typical Ellen fashion, she partnered up with Lowe’s and donated $500,000 to the school.

DeGeneres said she wanted to help Spain Elementary Middle School where numerous students are underprivileged and homeless.

City inspectors found plenty wrong last month at Spain Elementary School including damage to the ceiling, wall and floor of the gymnasium, rodents, loose door frames, missing floor tiles, broken glass, water damage and mold.

A crumbling Detroit elementary school is getting help from some famous friends, including Ellen DeGeneres and Justin Bieber. “I love you. We love you”, said Spain principal Ronald Alexander.

DeGeneres also leveraged the power of her audience by creating a GoFundMe page where people can donate money to the school.

The home improvement company donated $200,000 in labor and materials to fix up the school.

GoFundMe encourages all to share the link on social media platforms, using #HelpSpainSchool to generate even more visibility and donations for the Spain School.

So if you’ve been keeping track, that’s half a million dollars in donations – not including the gift cards for faculty. DeGeneres also brings out Justin Bieber. Then, surprise guest Justin Bieber announced he is giving $1 from every concert ticket in MI sold to the school.

Repairs to the school are expected to start in late spring.
