Wisconsin coach Greg Gard watches the first half of the team’s NCAA college basketball game against Maryland, Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, in College Park, Md.

As underwhelming as the Terps were on the defensive end, they were even worse on offense. “We’ve had a good year”, Turgeon said.

In the closing seconds, Maryland freshman center Diamond Stone slammed Brown’s head into the ground after a scrum for a rebound. Shockingly, he was not ejected and both sides were assessed technical fouls, with Charlie Thomas earning the Badgers’ technical with an angry reaction that required restraint by his teammates.

The Badgers pulled out to a 16-point lead at 35-19 lead on a Khalil Iverson dunk and entered the half with a 36-21 lead.

Though 3-pointers from Koenig, Hayes and Brown kept Maryland at bay temporarily, the Terrapins fought back and cut the deficit to six, getting the Xfinity Center crowd on its feet and putting Wisconsin’s back against the wall. And after Stone’s bucket with five and a half minutes left made it an eight-point game, Zak Showalter answered with a big 3 to send it back to a double-digit advantage. Wisconsin hit its free throws down the stretch and held on for a 13-point win.

Maryland: After the Badgers outrebounded Maryland 40-30 and scored 20 second-chance points, Layman said, “We’ve come a long way defensively, but we didn’t play as we have recently”.

The Wildcats were leading by two when the Fighting Illini’s Malcolm Hill got tripped up as time expired after catching an inbounds pass. That gave IL (11-14, 3-9) its ninth loss in 12 games.

Forward Vitto Brown was huge for the Badgers as he ended up with 21 points. Koenig hit three triples and had 16 points. Demps and sophomore swingman Scottie Lindsey paced Northwestern (17-9, 5-8) with 18 points apiece. The Badgers still have to travel to three ranked Big Ten opponents’ gyms before the regular season concludes, and make a trip to The Barn to battle the Minnesota Gophers, who could still be hungry for their first conference win on March 2. Maryland senior guard Rasheed Sulaimon said he had talked to Stone after the game.

As a team, the Badgers shot 41.1 percent from the field, including going 12 of 26 from deep. Wisconsin will counter Trimble with junior forward Nigel Hayes, who is averaging 22.3 points in the last four contests.TV: 6:30 p.m. ET, ESPNABOUT WISCONSIN (15-9, 7-4 Big Ten): The Badgers are beating opposing defenses from deep and are 24-of-45 from 3-point range in the last two games.
